This visit by Trevor Mitchell, Historic England’s Retired Director for the North, highlights the significance of the £50m Victoria Riverside project, which has been praised for its successful renovation of Grade II and Grade II* Listed flax spinning mill into high-end residential apartments.

According to Trevor Mitchell, who has a wealth of experience and knowledge in historic buildings, the successful completion of the Victoria Riverside project is a remarkable achievement that required exceptional expertise and dedication. He also added that it is an impressive landmark scheme for Leeds and a credit to all those involved in its development.

“I am retiring from my role at Historic England shortly and knowing that these incredible buildings have been lovingly restored for future generations to enjoy is a fitting note to leave on.”

The six individual buildings of Victoria Riverside consist of 350 high-end one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, featuring stunning rooftop penthouses. It is noteworthy that all the units have been completely sold out.

Tony Lupton, Managing Director of Beckwith Design, said: “As architects, we take great pride in our ability to transform abandoned buildings and previously developed land into contemporary living spaces, and we are thrilled to have earned the endorsement of Historic England through their positive feedback. Their unwavering support throughout the project has been invaluable, as have the Leeds and Bradford Local Authorities and the subcontractors, for which we are deeply grateful.”

In 2022, Tony received the award for ‘Best Residential and Small Commercial Designer’ for the Yorkshire region in the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) for Victoria Riverside, which recognise excellence in the building industry and is a testament to the quality and safety of the construction work.
